Bioretention soils, otherwise known as bio mix soils, are blends of different soil materials. Their uses range from filtering stormwater to plant vegetation. Stormwater management systems are most notably retention ponds and rain gardens. Soil Solutions Group offers soil blends for the proper installation of these
The majority of bio mix soils are made up of sand, which helps to enhance drainage and prevent overflow, especially in areas that are susceptible to flash floods. Soils composed of clay and silt, which eliminate nitrogen and other contaminants. In addition, bio mix soils contain small quantities of organic matter that decomposes over time, releasing essential nutrients for vegetation as well as removing other organic matter that may contribute to the soil. Custom mixes are available upon request.
Soil blends provide reduction in pollutants and enhanced plant growth and drainage. The clay and silt remove nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and other elements from the stormwater. The water management system reduces pollution. Likewise, organic matter contributes to the decomposition of other organic matter. Decomposition will support the growth of vegetation in and around the pond. The sand in the mix provides sufficient drainage for the system, preventing floods and enabling runoff to flow into larger bodies of water
